The Catalan Water Agency (ACA), under the Department of Territory and Sustainability of the Catalonia Government, came after the merger of the Wastewater Treatment Agency and the Water Agency, as the public company responsible for planning and managing the complete water cycle in Catalonia.
On January 14, 2000, took place the first council of the ACA. Although, in legislatively terms, this public company was created on December 31, 1998 through Law 25/1998, we can consider that their activity is fully consolidated with the first meeting of its main governing body.
Since then, the ACA performs its functions with a comprehensive view of aquatic ecosystems, taking into account their balance and based on the principles of effectiveness, efficiency and cost savings. Their main goals are:
• Execute the Water Framework Directive (WFD).
• Protect the aquatic environment and authorize river works.
• Plan and manage water supply and water treatment to the inland basins of Catalonia.
• Build and operate water treatment plants.
• Compose flooding studies.
• Make inspections and monitoring.
• Develop laws in water issues.
Along these years, the Water Catalan Agency has been working in a significant deployment of the Wastewater Treatment Plan (with more than 500 active water treatment systems that cleans 97% of the Catalan population), in building pioneer water infrastructures which have helped to increase around 30% of the water supply guarantee, despite of serious setbacks as several periods of drought and economic difficulties experienced during last years.
As a result, along next years, the Agency wants to fulfill its objectives and work with dedication to offer optimal services, to improve the quality life of the citizens of Catalonia and to protect the environment as well.
