Frequently asked questions

What can we do to save water?

Make good use of water, without suffering or obsessing over it, meaning you should use water with a sense of responsibility without wasting or squandering it and always taking opportunities to save water. In the section”Did you know…” you will find advice on how to do this.

Consider that with good habits and with water-saving devices and cisterns, you can save up to 50% of the water currently used in the home.

Is our contribution important?

Yes, very. It is thanks to public collaboration and the effort made by all that we have been able to delay the possible restrictions. The sum of all our small efforts is achieving very important results.

With the water saved on average in Catalonia (around 4%), a one month's supply of water to 6 million inhabitants can be guaranteed.

If we enter the emergency phase, will there be water cuts?

This is an exceptional measure that will only be applied if it is strictly necessary. Your Municipal Council will inform you in advance of all restrictions (including domestic supply cuts) included in the municipal contingency plan. It should be remembered that emergency circumstances do not imply immediate cuts to domestic supply and that measures are being taken to avoid such cuts.

When are restrictions on water supply foreseen?

In the current scenario and even if it doesn't rain throughout the whole of spring, the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) does not foresee restrictions on the domestic water supply until the end of summer, except for what is provided for in municipal contingency plans once the emergency phase is entered.

How will we be informed of possible restrictions or cuts? Who will do this?

Your local council or your water supplier is responsible for informing the population with sufficient notice of the nature and timing of the restrictions foreseen.

Who can we call to get information about the effect of the restrictions in any of the stages set by the decree

Individuals should contact their supplier and companies or businesses should contact their local council, who will determine, should it be necessary, the measures to be taken in the municipality.

At work we use water in our business activity. Should we be concerned about our our businesses?

Exceptional situation 2 does not affect economic activities connected to the supply network, except if they require the use of water from the supply network for irrigation, filling swimming pools and/or those activities described by the Municipal Councils in their contingency plans or municipal edicts. In this case only alternative sources can be used, such as treated or reclaimed water, if it is available. For more information please approach your Municipal Council or the Catalan Water Agency.

At work we use water in our business activity. What will happen if an emergency situation is declared?

You will need to speak to your municipal council, to find out whether the measures provided for in the municipal contingency plan will affect you or not.

Can swimming pools be filled with drinking water? And with non-potable water?

From exceptional situation 2 onwards, no swimming pool may be filled with drinking water. Public municipal swimming pools may only be filled with water which is not from the supply network if the council requests authorisation from the ACA and a favourable report is received from the Department of Health. If your town is in stage 1, we recommend you to approach your local council for information about the saving or restrictive measures that have been established for each situation, as it is the competent authority for the management, control and distribution of domestic water at municipal level.

From what point onwards is watering public and private gardens with water from the supply network not permitted?

From exceptional situation 2 onwards and while the Decree on drought is in force and until the basins of Catalonia return to a normal situation.

Why are there golf courses and football fields being watered?

Because they are using water from treatment plants or wells and groundwater sources and they have the appropriate authorisations. Under no circumstances may water from the supply network be used.

How will the drought affect the use of water in agriculture?

In a drought situation the first priority is to guarantee domestic water supply to the whole population. The Catalan Water Agency has put in place a series of palliative measures for the farmers affected.

What can we do if we believe that someone is wasting water in breach of the Decree?

Contact your municipal council or water company to inform them of the situation.

How could the drought or the water restrictions affect the quality of tap water?

The quality of tap water is guaranteed at all times by the suppliers.

When was the last time there were water restrictions in Barcelona?

In 1953, when the rainfall was only about 50% to 60% of the norm. The restrictions commenced in the middle of May and the supply was cut for around 30% of the hours of the day.

How can the drought affect nature? What is being done to avoid this?

To fight the negative effects on nature and to help sustain the river ecosystems, the Decree on drought establishes obligatory respect for the “minimum flow rates", that is, the minimum amount of water which is needed to sustain life in the natural habitats of our rivers.
